Waren es früher die Türme der Kirchen und Kathedralen, so sind es heute die Hochhäuser der Grosskonzerne die unsere Stadt-Silhouette dominieren. Architektur und deren Ausprägung sind immer Spiegelbild der Zeit und der gesellschaftlichen Ordnung in der wir leben. So kennzeichnen in Basel mittlerweile die Leuchtschriften und Logos der Chemiekonzerne die höchsten Gebäude der Stadt. Sie besetzen den Himmel und beanspruchen das Sichtfeld aller. Doch markieren sie im Grunde rein private Stadtareale, die der Öffentlichkeit gänzlich entzogen sind. Nur eine auserlesene Arbeiterelite hat Zugang zum Areal - einem durchkomponierten Konglomerat an Vorzeigearchitekturen. Ansprechende Begegnungszonen sollen für Austausch sorgen, stehen aber meist im Widerspruch zum individuellen Karriere- und Erfolgsstreben der Arbeiterschar. Denn den Leistungszielen sei Dank, sie steigern den Betriebsgewinn und wie angenehm - die Steuerkasse Basels. 



 Ein wenig verloren steht heute das Basler Münster da. Vorbei die Zeiten, als es jahrhundertelang das höchste Gebäude und Hauptpfeiler des gesellschaftlichen Lebens Basels war. Fast vergessen seine wichtige soziale Rolle für die Stadt. Doch noch immer bietet die Institution Raum für jedermann, grenzt niemanden aus, heißt jeden willkommen - unabhängig von Herkunft, Klasse und des Alters - frei zugänglich für jedermann und vor allem ohne Konsum- und Leistungszwang. 

 Wir geben dem Basler Münster die Höhe zurück. Mit einer Struktur erobern wir den Himmel und kontern den Höhen der umliegenden Konzernhochhäusern. Das über Generationen stetig laufende Erweitern, Anpassen und Fortstricken des Münsterensembles wird wieder weitergeführt – trotz Einsprache der Denkmalpflege. Wir erweitern das Querschiff vertikal. Eine dritte filigrane Turmstruktur setzt sich rheinseitig ab. An ihrer Spitze prangert keine Werbebotschaft sondern strahlt das Grusswort: Hello. Als eines der meist gesprochenen Wörter unserer Erde, steht es am Anfang jeglicher möglichen Kommunikation und jeden Dialogs. Es ist eine Ode auf das Miteinander und auch ein Sinnbild für die eigentlich grundlegendsten Tugenden unserer christlichen Tradition: Achtsamkeit und Fürsorge für sein Gegenüber - Tugenden für die die Kirche eigentlich seit Anbeginn eingestanden ist, und für die es heute in unserer Leistungs- und ichbezogenen Gesellschaft noch vermehrt einzustehen gilt.

Whereas in the past it was the towers of the churches and cathedrals, today it is the skyscrapers of the large corporations that dominate our city silhouette. Architecture and its expression are always a reflection of the time and the social order in which we live. In Basel, for example, the illuminated letters and logos of the chemical companies now mark the city's tallest buildings. They occupy the sky and occupy everyone's field of vision. But they basically mark private city areas that are completely unaccessible to the public. Only a selected working class elite has access to that area - to a thoroughly composed conglomerate of showpiece-architectures. Attractive meeting zones are intended to provide for exchange, but are usually contradictory to the individual career and success aspirations of the work force. For thanks to the performance targets, they increase the operating profit and  - how pleasant - Basel's tax income. 


Today, the Basel Minster stands a little lost on its plot. Gone are the days when it was the highest building and main pillar of Basel's social life for centuries. Almost forgotten its important social role for the city. But the institution still offers space for everyone, does not exclude anyone, welcomes everyone - regardless of origin, class or age - freely accessible for everyone and, above all, without any compulsion to consume or perform.

We give back the height to the Basel Minster. We conquer the sky with a structure and counter the heights of the surrounding corporate towers. The continuous expansion, adaptation and perpetual knitting of the Minster ensemble, which has been going on for generations, is being continued again - despite the objection of the heritage conservation. We are extending the transept vertically. A third filigree tower structure is set off on the Rhine side. At its top there is no advertising message, but the greeting word shines: Hello. As one of the most spoken words on earth, it stands at the beginning of all possible communication and dialogue. It is an ode to togetherness and also a symbol for the actually most fundamental virtues of our Christian tradition: mindfulness and care for one's counterpart - virtues for which the church has actually stood up since the very beginning and for which we have to stand up more and more today in our performance- and egocentric society.
